IRIS READS

Color proportions and the 55 20 20 5 starting ratio

Designers have long leaned on the 60 30 10 rule, which gives most of a room or a layout to one dominant color and saves the smallest share for an accent. It keeps getting passed down because proportion carries so much of a palette's feeling that two designs built from the same five colors can look like they came from different decades.

The Iris Color System starts from a ratio of 55 to 20 to 20 to 5 across four roles, giving the Anchor the largest share while the Energy and the Atmosphere split the middle and the Anomaly holds a small accent at the edge. That ratio is where new work can begin, but every image you read through Iris departs from it in its own way and the departure is the reading.

The polished stones on black give their Anchor 48% because the terracotta red claims 32% of the colors where an Energy usually starts at 20, and that heavy red is exactly why the image feels so warm.
